Camino del vino Castilla y Leon: Walking the Camino is not only a religious, sportive or spiritual experience, it is also a good opportunity to get acquainted with Spain in terms of food and drinks. Merel has a passion for wine, is a member of a wine society and regularly writes about wine and her preferences. In Albergue Villares de Orbigo, Merel has put together the wine assortiment and this produces fantastic and very affordable wines that we serve to our guests and with which we try to distinguish ourselves.

When you walk the Camino Frances you pass through several wine regions. If you want to go well-informed about wine, read the articles that Merel has written and enjoy all the beauty that Spain and the Camino have to offer. So enjoy your camino del vino!

Part 3: Castilla y Leon

This region is immense, the camino does not really run through a wine region. South of the city of Leon is a small wine region where we get our wines for our inn.

Still, I want to discuss this area because it’s so important, because who doesn’t drink a delicious glass of Verdejo after a day of walking! The Rueda has become a symbol for quality white wine. The basic grape is the Verdejo, which thrives very well here.

Three types of white wine are made ; Rueda consisting of at least 50% Verdejo, Rueda superior at least 85% Verdejo and Rueda espumoso which also consists of 85% Verdejo. The wine is fresh and aromatic with good acidity, impressions of apple and citrus with a nice aftertaste. Other important grapes in the Rueda are Viura and Sauvignon blanc.
